Free stepping stone spacing calculator for garden paths. Enter the path run along your layout line, each stone's span parallel to the walk, and comfortable min/target/max gaps to auto-select a stone count—or lock the number of stones you already bought and read the uniform joint before you screed bedding.

Along your string line: 18 ft along layout.
Auto mode picks an integer stone count whose uniform open gap is closest to your target while respecting min and max stride or joint gaps.
Uniform gap (open space between stone faces)
24 in
≈ 2 ft
≈ 24 in (nearest 1/32 in)
Stones along path: 6 (auto)
Max stones still honoring min gap: 6
Treat the path run as the straight-line distance along which you are setting stone faces (not diagonal shortcuts across beds). Measure the exposed stone dimension along that line—round flagstones use diameter; rectangles use width parallel to the walk. Bedding thickness, curves, and irregular flagstones still need field layout with a tape and story pole.

18 ft path, 16 in stones, 18–36 in gap window, 24 in target (defaults):
24 in
6 stones · ≈ 2 ft
For N identical stones placed in one line, each with span S measured parallel to the path, the clear run W satisfies W = N·S + (N−1)·g where g is the uniform open gap between neighboring faces. Solving for g gives g = (W − N·S)/(N−1) when N ≥ 2. Auto mode scans feasible integer values of N that keep g inside your minimum and maximum comfort window, then chooses the count whose g is closest to your target—handy when you want predictable stride length on mulch or lawn paths. When you already own N stones, the same formula reports the gap you will see on site.
W = N·S + (N−1)·gg = (W − N·S) / (N−1)N_max = ⌊(W + g_min) / (S + g_min)⌋N_max estimates how many stones can fit if every joint is at least your minimum gap—useful before you optimize toward the target stride.
