How Our Sand Calculator Works
Our sand calculator uses standard construction formulas and material densities to provide accurate estimates for playgrounds, construction, and landscaping projects. The calculation considers area dimensions, depth, sand type, and compaction factorsto determine the exact volume, weight, and cost requirements for your project.
Sand Calculation Formula
Area = Length × Width (square feet)
Volume = Area × (Depth ÷ 12) (cubic feet)
Cubic Yards = Volume ÷ 27
Tons = (Cubic Yards × Density × Compaction) ÷ 2000
This formula converts area measurements to volume, accounts for different sand densities, includes compaction factors, and provides both volume and weight estimates. The calculation ensures accurate material ordering and cost estimation for your project.

Sand Selection Guide
Choosing the right sand depends on your project requirements, safety considerations, aesthetic preferences, and budget. Different sand types have varying properties including texture, cleanliness, drainage, and cost. Our calculator helps you understand the implications of each sand choice.
- Play sand: Safe for children, soft texture, clean and washed
- Mason sand: Fine texture, good for mortar and plaster work
- Concrete sand: Coarse texture, ideal for concrete mixes
- Fill sand: Economical option, good for backfill and leveling
- Beach sand: Decorative, attractive appearance, premium option
- River sand: Natural, versatile, good for general use

Project Specifications:
- Area Length: 20 feet
- Area Width: 15 feet
- Depth: 6 inches
- Sand Type: Play Sand
- Compaction: Moderate
- Density: 2,400 lbs/cu yd
Calculation Steps:
- Area: 20 × 15 = 300 sq ft
- Depth in feet: 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5 feet
- Volume: 300 × 0.5 = 150 cu ft
- Cubic yards: 150 ÷ 27 = 5.56 cu yd
- Tons: (5.56 × 2,400 × 1.1) ÷ 2000 = 7.3 tons
- Truck loads: 5.56 ÷ 10 = 1 load
Result: 5.56 cubic yards, 7.3 tons, 1 truck load, $139 cost estimate
Includes moderate compaction factor and delivery estimates for planning purposes.
Mason Sand Example
10' × 8' area with 2" mason sand depth
Result: 0.49 cu yd, $15 cost estimate
Concrete Sand Example
25' × 20' area with 3" concrete sand depth
Result: 4.63 cu yd, $162 cost estimate
