How Our Fill Dirt Calculator Works

Our fill dirt calculator uses standard construction formulas and material densities to provide accurate estimates for landscaping and construction projects. The calculation considers area dimensions, fill depth, soil type, and compaction factorsto determine the exact volume, weight, and cost requirements for your project.

Fill Dirt Calculation Formula

Area = Length × Width (square feet)
Volume = Area × (Depth ÷ 12) (cubic feet)
Cubic Yards = Volume ÷ 27
Tons = (Cubic Yards × Density × Compaction) ÷ 2000

This formula converts area measurements to volume, accounts for different soil densities, includes compaction factors, and provides both volume and weight estimates. The calculation ensures accurate material ordering and cost estimation for your project.

Material Selection Guide

Choosing the right fill material depends on your project requirements, drainage needs, load requirements, and future use. Different soil types have varying properties including density, compaction characteristics, drainage capacity, and cost. Our calculator helps you understand the implications of each material choice.

  • Topsoil: Best for planting, highest cost, organic matter content
  • Fill dirt: General purpose, moderate cost, good compaction
  • Clay: Water retention, heavy material, good for foundations
  • Sand: Excellent drainage, moderate cost, good for leveling
  • Gravel: Durable, higher cost, good for driveways and paths
  • Crushed stone: Premium material, highest cost, structural applications

Fill Dirt Calculator Examples

Landscaping Fill Project Example
Calculate fill dirt requirements for a 50' × 30' area with 6" fill depth using fill dirt

Project Specifications:

  • Area Length: 50 feet
  • Area Width: 30 feet
  • Fill Depth: 6 inches
  • Soil Type: Fill dirt
  • Compaction: Moderate
  • Density: 2,200 lbs/cu yd

Calculation Steps:

  1. Area: 50 × 30 = 1,500 sq ft
  2. Depth in feet: 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5 feet
  3. Volume: 1,500 × 0.5 = 750 cu ft
  4. Cubic yards: 750 ÷ 27 = 27.78 cu yd
  5. Tons: (27.78 × 2,200 × 1.1) ÷ 2000 = 33.6 tons
  6. Truck loads: 27.78 ÷ 10 = 3 loads

Result: 27.78 cubic yards, 33.6 tons, 3 truck loads, $417 cost estimate

Includes moderate compaction factor and delivery estimates for planning purposes.

Topsoil Garden Bed Example

20' × 10' area with 8" topsoil depth

Result: 4.94 cu yd, $123 cost estimate

Gravel Driveway Example

100' × 12' area with 4" gravel depth

Result: 14.81 cu yd, $519 cost estimate
