How Our Crushed Stone Calculator Works

Our crushed stone calculator uses standard construction formulas and material densities to provide accurate estimates for driveways, paths, and construction projects. The calculation considers area dimensions, depth, stone type, and compaction factorsto determine the exact volume, weight, and cost requirements for your project.

Crushed Stone Calculation Formula

Area = Length × Width (square feet)
Volume = Area × (Depth ÷ 12) (cubic feet)
Cubic Yards = Volume ÷ 27
Tons = (Cubic Yards × Density × Compaction) ÷ 2000

This formula converts area measurements to volume, accounts for different stone densities, includes compaction factors, and provides both volume and weight estimates. The calculation ensures accurate material ordering and cost estimation for your project.

Stone Selection Guide

Choosing the right crushed stone depends on your project requirements, traffic load, aesthetic preferences, and budget considerations. Different stone types have varying properties including density, color, durability, and cost. Our calculator helps you understand the implications of each stone choice.

  • Limestone: Most versatile, good for general use, moderate cost
  • Granite: Durable and attractive, good for high-traffic areas
  • Basalt: Dark color, excellent for decorative applications
  • Trap rock: Very durable, ideal for heavy-duty applications
  • Gabbro: Dense and strong, good for structural applications
  • Quartzite: Hard and decorative, premium material choice

Crushed Stone Calculator Examples

Driveway Construction Example
Calculate crushed stone requirements for a 50' × 30' driveway with 4" depth using limestone

Project Specifications:

  • Area Length: 50 feet
  • Area Width: 30 feet
  • Depth: 4 inches
  • Stone Type: Limestone
  • Compaction: Moderate
  • Density: 2,700 lbs/cu yd

Calculation Steps:

  1. Area: 50 × 30 = 1,500 sq ft
  2. Depth in feet: 4 ÷ 12 = 0.33 feet
  3. Volume: 1,500 × 0.33 = 500 cu ft
  4. Cubic yards: 500 ÷ 27 = 18.52 cu yd
  5. Tons: (18.52 × 2,700 × 1.1) ÷ 2000 = 27.5 tons
  6. Truck loads: 18.52 ÷ 10 = 2 loads

Result: 18.52 cubic yards, 27.5 tons, 2 truck loads, $648 cost estimate

Includes moderate compaction factor and delivery estimates for planning purposes.

Granite Walkway Example

20' × 4' area with 3" granite depth

Result: 0.74 cu yd, $30 cost estimate

Basalt Patio Example

25' × 15' area with 2" basalt depth

Result: 2.31 cu yd, $104 cost estimate
