How do I measure for compression socks or knee-high stockings?

Stand with weight on both feet. (1) Calf: soft tape around the widest part of the calf — default 37 cm → size M in our calf band table (33–38 cm for M). (2) Ankle: narrowest point just above the ankle bone — default 23 cm; confirm the brand lists an ankle range for size M. Tape snug and level, not twisted. Measure both legs if they differ — size to the larger calf unless your clinician says otherwise.

What calf girth fits each generic compression sock size?

This tool’s calf bands (not brand-specific): XS 0–28 cm, S 28–33 cm, M 33–38 cm, L 38–43 cm, XL 43–48 cm, XXL 48+ cm. Example: 37 cm → M. XL for 45 cm calf. In inches: M ≈ 13–15 in calf girth.

How do I measure for a calf compression sleeve?

Same calf girth as socks — widest point, standing. Example: 16 in calf → 40.6 cm internally → size L (band 38–43 cm). Sleeves skip ankle; brands may also ask forearm or length — check the SKU chart.

How do I measure for an arm compression sleeve?

Relax the arm (do not flex hard). Mid-bicep girth where the sleeve sits. Example: 27 cm → size M (band 25–28 cm). Arm table: S 22–25 cm, L 28–32 cm. Flexing adds 1–3 cm and can oversize you.

How do I size a compression shirt or top?

Chest at fullest point (tape under arms, straight across). Example: 98 cm → size L (chest band 96–103 cm). Chest bands: M 90–96 cm, XL 103–110 cm. Women’s athletic tops may use different charts; men’s may add height — use this as a first pass then read the tag.

Why does this calculator say “generic” sizing?

CEP, 2XU, Sigvaris, Jobst, and Amazon house brands use different letters, numbers (I–IV), and sometimes foot length. We map girth to simple XS–XXL for shopping prep. A “size M” 15–20 mmHg sock is not interchangeable with a “size M” 30–40 mmHg medical stocking without reading that product’s PDF.

Is compression class (mmHg) the same as letter size?

No. mmHg is pressure gradient; letter size is circumference fit. You need both correct for safety. Guide: 8–15 mmHg (Mild); 15–20 mmHg (Moderate); 20–30 mmHg (Firm); 30–40 mmHg (Extra firm). Firm 20–30 mmHg often needs professional fitting for vascular patients. This page sizes the garment; it does not prescribe a class.

What if I am between two sizes?

Default calf 37.5 cm stays size M but triggers a boundary note: “within ~1 cm of the next size.” Try the brand chart; tighter sport compression often sizes down if you want more squeeze; medical donning or swollen legs may size up. Example boundary case: You are within about 1 cm of the next size up—check a brand chart or try both if between sizes..

Can I use inches instead of centimeters?

Yes — toggle inches; we multiply by 2.54 internally. 16 in calf = 40.6 cm → size L in this table (band 38–43 cm). Rule of thumb: 14.6 in ≈ 37 cm → sock size M (13–15 in calf).

Does this replace a doctor or certified fitter?

No. Seek professional fitting for lymphedema, post-DVT, diabetes with neuropathy, open wounds, or prescribed compression. CDC notes proper fit for swelling conditions. Remove garments if you get numbness, tingling, blue/pale toes, or increasing pain.

How is this different from a suit or shoe size calculator?

How Sizing Works

Inputs convert to centimeters when you choose inches, then compare against overlapping girth bands. Socks size primarily from calf; ankle is validated and flagged for narrow-ankle / wide-calf combos. The tool cannot see fabric knit, toe length, or thigh-high extensions — those live on the manufacturer chart.
