How do you calculate nail height for a picture?
Direct answer
Nail = center + half the frame − hook drop. A 24-inch frame at a 58-inch center with a 4-inch hook drop needs the nail at 66 inches.
The 24-inch frame
57-inch eye line, standard style, center 58 inches. Half of 24 is 12, so the top of the frame is 70 inches. Subtract the hook drop to land the nail.
| Hook drop | Center | Nail |
|---|---|---|
| 2 in | 58 in | 68 in |
| 3 in | 58 in | 67 in |
| 4 in | 58 in | 66 in |
| 6 in | 58 in | 64 in |
Style changes the nail by the same amount as the center
24-inch frame, 4-inch hook drop, 57-inch eye line.
| Style | Center | Nail |
|---|---|---|
| Gallery | 57 in | 65 in |
| Standard | 58 in | 66 in |
| Above furniture | 59 in | 67 in |
In centimeters, a 60 cm frame with a 10 cm drop and a 145 cm eye line (standard style) puts the nail at 167.5 cm and the center at 147.5 cm.
Limits
- Measure hook drop on the finished frame, from the top edge to the point that sits on the nail.
- Two hooks on a wire share one high point. Measure to that high point, not to each D-ring.
- The nail height is a placement mark. Studs, anchors, and frame weight still decide whether that spot can hold the piece.
