Picture hanging height is where the center of a piece of art sits above the floor. The standard used by galleries and designers is 57 inches (145 cm) on center — roughly average eye level — with 58–60 inches used by many museums, in hallways and under high ceilings. Above furniture, measure from the furniture instead: leave 6–10 inches above a sofa or console, 4–8 inches above a mantel. The nail goes at center + half the artwork height − the hanger drop (the distance from the top of the frame down to the taut wire or hanger).
