How high should you hang a picture?
Direct answer
Put the center at 58 inches when eye level is 57 inches and the style is standard. A 24-inch frame then runs from 46 to 70 inches off the floor.
Frame height at a 58-inch center
Eye level 57 inches, standard style (+1 inch), hook drop 4 inches. The center does not move when the frame gets taller. The edges do.
| Frame height | Bottom | Center | Top |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16 in | 50 in | 58 in | 66 in |
| 24 in | 46 in | 58 in | 70 in |
| 30 in | 43 in | 58 in | 73 in |
| 36 in | 40 in | 58 in | 76 in |
| 40 in | 38 in | 58 in | 78 in |
Three styles, same 24-inch frame
| Style | Center | Bottom to top |
|---|---|---|
| Gallery (eye line) | 57 in | 45–69 in |
| Standard (+1 in) | 58 in | 46–70 in |
| Above furniture (+2 in) | 59 in | 47–71 in |
Limits
- Heights are from the finished floor to the frame, using this calculator’s 57-inch eye line.
- A tall ceiling does not move the center up. Keep the piece you look at in the eye-level band.
- Above a sofa or console, designers often leave about 6–10 inches between the furniture and the bottom of the frame. The above-furniture style here only raises the center by 2 inches.
