Chronological age answers: “How much calendar time has passed since birth?” It powers school cutoff questions, sports eligibility, birthday planning, and many legal age tests. It does not measure maturity, health, or cognitive level.
NICU follow-up often uses adjusted age = chronological age − weeks born early (until ~2–3 years). A 12-month chronological preemie born 8 weeks early may be tracked as ~10 months adjusted on growth charts.
