Workdays in the period (exclude weekends and holidays)
Sum of all employee absent days in the period
Absence rate
1.09%
Total possible workdays
1,100 (employees × workdays)
50 employees × 22 workdays = 1,100 possible days. 12 days absent → 1.09% absence rate.
Absence rate
1.09%
The absence rate is the share of possible workdays that were lost to absenteeism. You need three numbers: total employees, total workdays in the period, and total days absent across all employees. The formula is:
Absence rate = (Total days absent ÷ (Employees × Workdays)) × 100
Workdays are days when people are normally scheduled to work (excluding weekends and holidays). Days absent usually include sick leave and other unscheduled absences; whether you include vacation depends on your policy. If employee count changes during the period, use an average.
