How Our Shipping Cost Estimator Works
Our shipping cost estimator uses carrier pricing formulas to calculate estimated shipping costs based on weight, dimensions, distance, and service type. The calculation applies standard carrier methodologies including dimensional weight pricing to help you estimate costs and optimize packaging for the most cost-effective shipping.
The Dimensional Weight Formula
Example: (12 × 10 × 8) ÷ 139 = 6.9 lbs
Example: Max(5 lbs, 6.9 lbs) = 6.9 lbs
Example: $23 base + $2.76 fuel = $25.76 total
Carriers charge for the space your package occupies (dimensional weight) or the actual weight, whichever is greater. This encourages efficient packaging and prevents shippers from sending large, lightweight packages that waste cargo space.
Shipping Zone Structure
Major carriers (UPS, FedEx) use 8 shipping zones based on distance from origin to destination. Understanding zones helps you estimate costs and make strategic decisions about fulfillment center locations.
- Zone 2: Local (0-150 miles) - Cheapest, 1-2 day ground
 - Zone 3: Regional (150-300 miles) - Moderate, 2-3 days
 - Zone 4: Regional+ (300-600 miles) - Mid-range, 3-4 days
 - Zone 5: Cross-region (600-1000 miles) - Higher cost, 4 days
 - Zone 6-7: Far cross-country (1000-1800 miles) - Expensive, 5 days
 - Zone 8: Longest distance (1800+ miles) - Most expensive, 5-7 days
