Belt Length Results

Belt Length

55.75 inches

(1416.05 mm)

Small Pulley Contact

177.1°

Large Pulley Contact

182.9°

Formula Used:

L = 2C + 1.57(D + d) + (D - d)² / (4C)

Recommendation:

Good configuration. Belt contact and tension should be adequate.

Belt Selection Tips:

  • • Minimum contact angle should be 120° for adequate grip
  • • Add 2-5% to calculated length for belt stretch and adjustment
  • • V-belts and serpentine belts use this same basic formula
  • • Always verify with manufacturer specifications

How Our Belt Length Calculator Works

Our belt length calculator uses the standard engineering formula for two-pulley belt drive systems. The calculation accounts for the straight sections of belt between pulleys and the curved sections that wrap around each pulley. This formula is applicable to V-belts, serpentine belts, timing belts, and flat belts.

Belt Length Formula

L = 2C + 1.57(D + d) + (D - d)² / (4C)

Where:

  • L = Belt length
  • C = Center distance between pulleys
  • D = Diameter of larger pulley
  • d = Diameter of smaller pulley
  • 1.57 = π/2 (half the circumference factor)

Understanding the Calculation

The formula breaks down into three components: the two straight sections (2C), the arc length around both pulleys (1.57(D + d)), and a correction factor for the geometry ((D - d)² / (4C)). The correction factor becomes more significant when there's a large difference in pulley sizes or a short center distance.

  • Measure pulley pitch diameter for V-belts (where belt sits in groove)
  • Use outer diameter for flat belts and timing belts
  • Center distance should be adjustable for belt tensioning
  • Minimum contact angle should be 120° on smaller pulley
  • Add 2-5% to calculated length for stretch and adjustment
  • Always verify with manufacturer specifications

Belt Length Calculator Examples

V-Belt Length Calculation Example
Calculate belt length for a motor driving a pump with 6\" and 4\" pulleys at 20\" centers

Given Dimensions:

  • Large pulley (D): 6 inches
  • Small pulley (d): 4 inches
  • Center distance (C): 20 inches

Calculation Steps:

  1. Straight sections: 2 × 20 = 40\"
  2. Arc length: 1.57 × (6 + 4) = 15.7\"
  3. Correction: (6 - 4)² / (4 × 20) = 0.05\"
  4. Total: 40 + 15.7 + 0.05 = 55.75\"

Result: Belt length = 55.75 inches

Add 2-5% for adjustment. Recommended belt size: 57-58 inches.

Automotive Serpentine Belt Example

Alternator drive: 5\" crank, 3\" alternator, 18\" centers

Belt length ≈ 48.6\" → Use 49\" belt

Timing Belt Example

CNC machine: 100mm and 60mm pulleys, 300mm centers

Belt length ≈ 851mm → 170 teeth (5mm pitch)
