How Our Framing Calculator Works
Our framing calculator uses professional picture framing formulas to calculate exact dimensions for all frame components. Starting with your artwork size, the calculator adds mat borders, accounts for frame moulding width, and provides precise cutting dimensions for glass, backing, and frame pieces needed for perfect custom framing.
The Framing Formula
The frame moulding width is added twice (once per side) to get the outer dimensions. Glass and backing are cut to the mat outer size. The miter cut length determines how long each piece of moulding should be measured from corner to corner on the outside edge for perfect 45-degree joints.

Understanding Picture Framing Components
Professional picture framing consists of multiple layers working together. The artwork sits in the center, protected by mat board that prevents contact with glass. The glass (or acrylic) protects from dust and damage while allowing visibility. The frame moulding surrounds everything, and backing board seals the package. Each component must be precisely sized for proper fit and professional appearance.
- Artwork: The actual print, photo, or art piece being framed
- Mat opening: Cut slightly smaller than artwork to create overlap
- Mat board: Creates visual space and protects artwork from glass contact
- Glass/acrylic: Protects artwork from dust, moisture, and handling
- Frame moulding: The decorative outer border, cut with miter joints
- Backing board: Seals the frame package from behind

Project Specifications:
- Artwork: 16" × 20"
- Mat Borders: 3" all sides
- Frame Moulding: 1.5"
- Mat Layers: Single
Calculation Steps:
- Mat outer: 16 + 6 = 22" × 20 + 6 = 26"
- Glass size: 22" × 26"
- Frame outer: 22 + 3 = 25" × 26 + 3 = 29"
- Total moulding: (25 + 29) × 2 = 108"
Result: 25" × 29" outer frame, 22" × 26" glass, 108" moulding needed
Professional proportions with balanced mat borders and standard moulding width.
