How do you convert square meters to acres?
Direct answer
Acres = square meters ÷ 4,046.86. That divisor is 43,560 × 0.09290304, using the international foot (0.3048 m). One hectare (10,000 m²) is 2.471 acres. A half mile by a half mile is 160 acres.

Feet and meters are not the same square
A 100 × 100 foot lot is 10,000 sq ft, about 0.230 acres. A 100 × 100 meter lot is 10,000 m², one hectare, 2.471 acres. Read the unit on the survey before you divide.
Half a mile by half a mile
0.5 mile is 2,640 feet. 2,640 × 2,640 = 6,969,600 sq ft ÷ 43,560 = 160 acres. In the U.S. Public Land Survey that square is a quarter section. A full section, one square mile, is 640 acres.
Limits
- Legal acreage is the figure on the deed, survey, or county parcel record.
- An irregular four-sided lot is not length × width. Average the opposite sides, or use the plat.
- Lot area is not buildable area. Setbacks and easements still apply after the conversion.
