How Our Venue Capacity Calculator Works
Our venue capacity calculator uses International Building Code (IBC) occupancy load factors and exit capacity requirements to determine safe maximum occupancy. The calculator evaluates space-based capacity, fire code limits, and exit egress capacity to identify the most restrictive safe limit for your venue.
Venue Capacity Calculation Formulas
The most restrictive calculation determines safe maximum capacity. Exit capacity often limits occupancy in older venues with fewer or narrower exits. Fire code occupancy load factors ensure adequate space for safe occupancy and emergency egress.

Understanding IBC Occupancy Load Factors
The International Building Code (IBC) establishes occupancy load factors specifying minimum square feet per occupant based on use type. Assembly spaces without fixed seats use 7 sq ft (net) for unconcentrated use like standing areas, or 15 sq ft (net) for concentrated use with tables and chairs. Spaces with fixed seating use actual seat count. These factors ensure adequate space for occupant comfort and safe emergency evacuation.
- Standing/reception events: 5-7 sq ft per person for comfortable density
- Banquet seating: 10-12 sq ft per person with round tables
- Theater seating: 7-10 sq ft per person (or use fixed seat count)
- Conference setup: 15-25 sq ft per person with tables and workspace
- Exit capacity: 0.2 inches per person minimum width requirement
- Minimum 2 exits required for occupancies over 50 people

Venue Details:
- Type: Banquet/Event Hall
- Dimensions: 100' × 80'
- Total area: 8,000 sq ft
- Stage area: 200 sq ft
- Usable area: 7,800 sq ft
- Ceiling height: 12 feet
- Exit count: 4 exits
- Exit width: 6 feet each
- Setup: Mixed use
Capacity Calculation:
- Total area: 100 × 80 = 8,000 sq ft
- Usable area: 8,000 - 200 = 7,800 sq ft
- Standing capacity: 7,800 ÷ 6 = 1,300 people
- Seated capacity: 7,800 ÷ 12 = 650 people
- Mixed capacity: 7,800 ÷ 10 = 780 people
- Fire code: 7,800 ÷ 7 = 1,114 people
- Exit capacity: (4 × 6 × 12) ÷ 0.2 = 1,440 people
- Recommended: MIN(780, 1,114, 1,440) = 780 people
Result: Maximum Capacity = 780 people for mixed seated/standing events
Space-based capacity limits this venue for mixed events. Exit capacity is adequate.
