Square Footage Calculator
Calculate the exact 2D area of any room, property, or landscape. Includes a built-in estimator to rapidly price out flooring, siding, and renovation material costs.
Mastering 2D Area Calculations
Unlike measuring a piece of string (1D length) or filling a bucket with water (3D volume), calculating 'Square Footage' exists strictly in 2D space. It is the measurement of a completely flat surface.
The Fundamental Multiplication Rule
To find the area of standard room, floor, or patch of grass, you simply multiply the two primary sides of the rectangle together:
Why Measurements Go Wrong
The number one reason homeowners miscalculate their renovation costs is due to failing to normalize their units of measurement. You cannot multiply 'Feet' by 'Inches'.
The Error: A room is 10 feet long and 150 inches wide. A homeowner multiplies $10 \times 150$ and mistakenly orders 1,500 square feet of flooring.
The Fix: All measurements must be translated into standard 'Feet' before multiplying. 150 inches equals 12.5 feet. The correct math is $10 \times 12.5$ = Exactly 125 Square Feet.
Adding The 10% "Waste Rule"
Our calculator outputs mathematical perfection. However, real life is rarely perfect. If you are calculating the square footage of a room to buy hardwood flooring, you should take the final calculator result and multiply it by 1.10 (adding a 10% premium). This extra 10% acts as a safety net for pieces of wood you will inevitably have to cut in half or destroy when trying to match the edges of corners and cabinets.
