Estimate Pepto-Bismol dose in mL from dog weight (lb or kg), age, GI condition, and regular vs children's formula. Uses teaching rate 0.75 mL per 10 lb regular strength (midpoint of 0.5–1 mL range). Shows mg bismuth subsalicylate, frequency, and duration. Veterinary approval required—salicylate toxicity risk; not for cats. See dog chocolate toxicity calculator for toxin cases (Pepto is not the treatment).

Call your veterinarian or emergency clinic before giving human OTC medications. ASPCA Poison Control: 888-426-4435 (fee may apply).
Per dose
1.88 mL
(0.38 tsp)
~33 mg bismuth subsalicylate
Frequency
Every 6–8 hours (up to 3 times daily)
Max duration
24–48 hours maximum
Educational estimate only—call your veterinarian before giving human OTC meds to your dog
Contains salicylates (aspirin-related)—overdose causes GI bleeding, acidosis, neuro signs
Do not combine with carprofen, meloxicam, aspirin, or corticosteroids unless vet directs
Not for cats
Default — 25 lb, diarrhea
1.88 mL
~33 mg bismuth
30 lb adult
2.25 mL
12 lb upset stomach
0.9 mL
27 kg (~60 lb)
4.46 mL
25 lb children's formula
3.75 mL
Same mg as regular
Teaching midpoint 0.75 mL regular-strength Pepto per 10 lb per dose.
| Step | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Weight in lb | lb = kg × 2.20462 (if entered in kg) | 11.3 kg → 25 lb |
| Regular-strength mL | (lb ÷ 10) × 0.75 mL | 25 lb → 1.88 mL |
| Children's volume | Regular mL × 2 (half-strength product) | 1.88 mL regular → 3.75 mL children's |
| Teaspoons | mL ÷ 4.929 | 1.88 mL ≈ 0.38 tsp |
| Bismuth subsalicylate | Regular mL × 17.5 mg/mL | 1.88 mL ≈ 33 mg |
| Weight | Low (0.5) | Mid (0.75) | High (1.0) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 lb | 0.5 mL | 0.75 mL | 1.0 mL | Toy breeds—measure with syringe |
| 25 lb | 1.25 mL | 1.88 mL | 2.5 mL | Default demo weight |
| 30 lb | 1.5 mL | 2.25 mL | 3.0 mL | Medium dog example |
| 60 lb | 3.0 mL | 4.5 mL | 6.0 mL | Large dog—vet oversight advised |
| 90 lb | 4.5 mL | 6.75 mL | 9.0 mL | Do not exceed vet-directed max per dose |
| Condition | Frequency | Max duration |
|---|---|---|
| Diarrhea | Every 6–8 h (max 3×/day) | 24–48 h max |
| Upset stomach | Every 8–12 h (2–3×/day) | 24 h max |
| Nausea | Every 8–12 h (2–3×/day) | 24 h max |
| Situation | Why avoid |
|---|---|
| Puppies <1 year | Higher salicylate sensitivity—vet consult first |
| Pregnant/nursing bitches | Salicylate risk to pups |
| Cats | Pepto-Bismol not for cats—salicylate toxicosis |
| On NSAIDs / aspirin / steroids | Additive salicylate toxicity and GI ulceration |
| Bleeding disorders | Salicylate impairs platelet function |
| Bloody diarrhea or vomiting | May need emergency workup—not home pepto |
| Sign | Action |
|---|---|
| Black tarry stool (melena) | GI bleeding vs benign bismuth stool darkening—vet must distinguish |
| Vomiting, anorexia, weakness | Stop pepto; salicylate toxicity or worsening primary disease |
| Ataxia, tremors, seizures | Emergency—salicylate neurotoxicity possible |
| Rapid breathing | Metabolic acidosis concern with salicylates |
| Trigger | Why |
|---|---|
| Diarrhea >48 h or worsening | Fecal testing, parvo rule-out, dietary indiscretion vs serious cause |
| Blood in stool or vomit | Urgent vet—HGE, parvo, foreign body |
| Lethargy, collapse, pale gums | Emergency—shock, anemia, toxicity |
| Puppy unvaccinated with GI signs | Parvovirus emergency until proven otherwise |
Result: 2.25 mL (0.46 tsp) per dose.
Regular 1.88 mL ≈ Children's 3.75 mL — both ~33 mg bismuth subsalicylate.
