Rotational Dynamics

A point on the outer edge of a wheel travels faster than a point closer to the center, even though the entire wheel has the exact same RPM. That's why the wheel's radius is so critical for this calculation!

Visualizing Linear vs. Rotational Speed

How does a spinning object push a vehicle forward? Through the friction between the tire and the ground. Here's how physical geometry links linear speed and rotational RPM.

Linear Speed (v)

Linear speed is the straight-line distance a vehicle travels over time (e.g. 60 mph down the highway). To link this to a wheel, we imagine the wheel "unrolling" its circumference onto the pavement.

Formula: v = r × ω

Angular Speed (ω)

Angular speed strictly measures how quickly an object is rotating. In physics formulas, this is measured in radians per second (rad/s) because radians inherently link angles to arc lengths (distance). We convert this to RPM for real-world usability.

Formula: ω = RPM × (2π / 60)
