The Danger of "Billable Weight"
The number one reason ecommerce sellers and logistics dispatchers lose money on shipping is failing to account for Dimensional Weight. When an 18-wheeler is driving down the highway, it usually runs out of physical space long before it hits its legal weight limit. Because of this, UPS, FedEx, and DHL penalize shippers who mail large, mostly-empty boxes.
The DIM Weight Formula
Where L, W, and H are measured in inches, and the divisor is 139 for standard domestic logistics.
Real-World Example: Shipping a Pillow
Imagine you are shipping a large decorative pillow. You put it on your home scale, and it weighs exactly 3 Lbs.
- You pack the pillow into a box that is 20" by 20" by 10".
- Actual Weight = 3 Lbs
- Dimensional calculation: (20 × 20 × 10) = 4,000 cubic inches.
- DIM Weight = 4,000 / 139 = 28.7 Lbs
UPS will round the 28.7 up to the nearest whole number. You thought you were paying the rate for a 3-pound package, but UPS will literally charge you the rate of a 29-pound package.
