Calculate the amount of stone needed for your project

Quick Example Result

For a typical driveway project (20ft × 10ft × 3" deep with crushed stone):

2.5 tons of stone needed

How This Calculator Works

Our stone calculator uses industry-standard density values and coverage factors to determine the exact amount of stone materials needed for your project. The calculation considers stone type, size, project dimensions, and includes construction best practices for wastage and compaction.

The Formula

weight = (length × width × depth) × stone_density × (1 + wastage_factor)

This formula calculates the total weight in tons, accounting for stone density variations and recommended wastage factors. Coverage factors adjust for different stone sizes and compaction rates.

Stone Types & Applications

Different stone types have varying densities, costs, and applications. Our calculator includes data for common materials used in construction and landscaping projects, ensuring accurate estimates for your specific needs.

  • Crushed Stone: Best for driveways and walkways, excellent compaction
  • Gravel: Ideal for drainage and decorative applications
  • River Rock: Perfect for landscaping and water features
  • Decorative Stone: Premium option for aesthetic projects
  • Flagstone: Natural flat stone for patios and pathways

Example Calculation

Real-World Example
Let's calculate stone needed for a typical driveway project

Project Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 20ft × 10ft × 3" deep
  • Stone Type: Crushed stone
  • Stone Size: Medium (1/2" - 1")
  • Wastage: 10% included

Calculation Steps:

  1. Volume: 20 × 10 × 0.25 = 50 cubic feet
  2. Adjust for coverage: 50 ÷ 0.90 = 55.6 cubic feet
  3. Add wastage: 55.6 × 1.10 = 61.2 cubic feet
  4. Weight: 61.2 × 100 lbs/ft³ = 6,120 lbs = 3.1 tons

Result: You need 3.1 tons of crushed stone, estimated cost: $93

This requires 1 truck delivery and provides excellent base support for your driveway.
