Mini Split Sizing Recommendation
💡 Tip: This size should provide optimal comfort and efficiency for your space. Consider a variable-speed inverter model for better energy savings and temperature control.
Quick Example Result
For a typical 192 sq ft living room (16' × 12') in mixed climate zone 4:
Recommended: 24,000 BTU/hr (2 tons)
Based on room type, climate, windows, and occupancy factors
How This Calculator Works
Our mini split sizing calculator uses Manual J heat load calculation principles and HVAC industry standards to determine the optimal BTU capacity for your space. The calculation considers your room characteristics, climate conditions, and usage patterns to recommend the most efficient mini split size for year-round comfort.
BTU Sizing Formula
The calculator then rounds to the nearest standard mini split size (6K, 9K, 12K, 15K, 18K, 24K, 30K, 36K BTU) and provides efficiency recommendations based on your climate zone.
Climate Zone Impact
Hot Climates (Zones 1-3)
- • Higher cooling loads and humidity
- • Recommend SEER 20+ for efficiency
- • Focus on dehumidification capability
Cold Climates (Zones 6-8)
- • Enhanced heating performance needed
- • Cold climate heat pump required
- • High HSPF rating for heating efficiency
Room Type Adjustments
- Bedrooms: Standard load (1.0x multiplier)
- Living Rooms: Higher occupancy load (1.1x multiplier)
- Kitchens: Significant heat from appliances (1.3x multiplier)
- Sunrooms: Maximum solar heat gain (1.4x multiplier)
- Basements: Naturally cooler, reduced load (0.9x multiplier)

Room Details:
- Room Size: 16' × 12' (192 sq ft)
- Ceiling Height: 8 feet
- Room Type: Living room
- Climate Zone: 4 (Mixed, Humid)
- Windows: 40 sq ft, south-facing
- Occupancy: 2 people
BTU Calculation:
- Base load: 192 sq ft × 20 = 3,840 BTU
- Room adjustment: 3,840 × 1.1 = 4,224 BTU
- Climate adjustment: 4,224 × 0.95 = 4,013 BTU
- Window heat gain: 40 × 400 = 16,000 BTU
- Occupancy: 2 × 300 = 600 BTU
- Heat sources: 400 BTU
- Total: ~24,000 BTU
Recommendation: 24,000 BTU/hr (2 ton) mini split
This size provides optimal cooling and heating for the space while maintaining energy efficiency.
