Tip: It is almost impossible to perfectly match colored grout from different manufacturing batches. Always buy slightly more than the calculator suggests to ensure strict color consistency across your entire project.
Mastering The Finish
Grouting is the final, defining step of any tile installation. Poorly mixed or incorrectly estimated grout can ruin thousands of dollars of beautiful tile work.
The "Mosaics" Trap
First-time DIYers usually underestimate how much grout small mosaic tiles consume. A 12x24 inch tile floor requires barely any grout because the surface is 98% tile. But a shower pan lined with 1x1 inch glass mosaic tiles is nearly 20% grout by volume. This calculator perfectly scales the required weight based on the exact dimensions of your tiles.
Mixing and Slaking
When you mix cementitious grout, you must let it "slake" (rest) for about 5 to 10 minutes before applying it. This allows the chemicals to bond with the water. If you run out of grout mid-wall and have to mix a new batch, your slake time delays the project and risks causing a visible "cold joint" where the new wet grout meets the partially dry older grout.
