How Our 401k Loan Calculator Works

Our 401k loan calculator uses standard loan amortization formulas to calculate monthly payments, total interest, and eligibility based on IRS rules and plan requirements. The calculation considersretirement planning principles to help you make informed decisions about borrowing from your 401k.

Key 401k Loan Rules

Maximum Loan: 50% of vested balance or $50,000
Repayment Term: 5 years (15 years for home purchase)
Interest Rate: Prime rate + 1-2%
Minimum Loan: $1,000

These rules are set by the IRS and your 401k plan administrator. Understanding these limits helps you determine if a 401k loan is right for your situation.

Mathematical Foundation

401k loan calculations use the standard PMT (Payment) formula from financial mathematics. The monthly payment is calculated using the loan amount, interest rate, and term, similar to traditional loans. However, the interest paid goes back into your own retirement account.

  • Monthly payment = P × [r(1+r)^n] / [(1+r)^n - 1]
  • P = Principal loan amount
  • r = Monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12)
  • n = Total number of payments (years × 12)
  • Interest paid goes back to your 401k account
  • No credit check required for 401k loans
