Semifinalist and Commended thresholds change every competition year and by state. This tool only computes the official Selection Index formula from your three test scores.
Values are rounded to the nearest whole number before applying the 8–38 range (same as typical score report integers).
Selection Index
198
Possible range on this scale: 48–228
How this number was obtained
Sum of test scores: 32 + 33 + 34 = 99
Selection Index = 2 × (32 + 33 + 34) = 198
Output
Whole-number index
Matches the standard National Merit Selection Index definition from PSAT/NMSQT test scores.
Planning
Goal setting
Model how a one-point change in any test score moves the Selection Index by two points.
Scale
8–38 each
Uses the three Test Scores, not the 160–760 Evidence-Based Reading and Writing display alone.
Reminder
Cutoffs move yearly
Counselors and state forums often discuss prior Selection Index cutoffs; treat them as historical, not promises.

The results card spells out the sum and doubling so families can verify against hand calculations.

The National Merit Scholarship Program publishes that the Selection Index equals twice the sum of the Reading Test Score, Writing and Language Test Score, and Math Test Score from the PSAT/NMSQT. Each of those scores is reported on a scale from 8 to 38 on the student score report. Our PSAT score calculator helps with the 320–1520 total scale, while this page focuses specifically on the Selection Index line used for National Merit entry.
