Volume Analysis

Board Volume

34.75 L

(2120.4 cubic inches)

Recommended Vol.

68 L

Volume Ratio

0.204 L/lb

Skill Level:

Expert/Pro

Very low volume for expert surfers. Excellent maneuverability but requires advanced paddling strength and wave-reading skills. Best for hollow, powerful waves.

Surfboard Volume Tips:

  • • More volume = easier paddling, better for small waves
  • • Less volume = better maneuverability, for experienced surfers
  • • Beginners: aim for 0.40-0.50 liters per pound
  • • Advanced: 0.30-0.38 liters per pound is typical

How Our Surfboard Volume Calculator Works

Our surfboard volume calculator uses industry-standard formulas to determine board volume and optimal sizing. The calculation accounts for board dimensions, shape type, rider weight, and skill level to provide accurate recommendations for surfboard selection and performance optimization.

Surfboard Volume Formula

Volume Calculation:

Volume = Length × Width × Thickness × Shape Factor

Convert to Liters:

Liters = Cubic Inches ÷ 61.024

Volume Ratio:

Ratio = Board Volume (L) ÷ Rider Weight (lbs)

Shape Factors by Board Type:

  • Gun: 0.58 (narrow, thin rails)
  • Shortboard: 0.62 (performance shape)
  • Fish: 0.65 (wider, fuller)
  • Funboard: 0.68 (hybrid shape)
  • Longboard: 0.70 (full, thick)
  • SUP: 0.75 (maximum volume)

Understanding Volume-to-Weight Ratios

The volume-to-weight ratio (liters per pound) is crucial for determining if a surfboard suits your ability level. Higher ratios provide more float and stability, making wave catching easier for beginners. Lower ratios offer better maneuverability and performance for advanced surfers. The optimal ratio varies with skill level, wave conditions, and surfing style. Our calculator analyzes your inputs to recommend the ideal volume range.

  • Measure length from nose tip to tail tip along the center
  • Width is measured at the widest point perpendicular to length
  • Thickness is measured at the thickest point (usually center)
  • Shape factor accounts for rail shape and board outline
  • Add 5-10L for small wave boards or learning
  • Subtract 3-5L for powerful waves if you're experienced

Surfboard Volume Calculator Examples

Shortboard Volume Calculation Example
Calculate volume for a performance shortboard for 170 lb intermediate surfer

Board Dimensions:

  • Length: 6'0" (72 inches)
  • Width: 19 inches
  • Thickness: 2.5 inches
  • Type: Shortboard (0.62 factor)
  • Rider Weight: 170 lbs

Calculation Steps:

  1. Volume = 72 × 19 × 2.5 × 0.62
  2. Volume = 2,122.8 cubic inches
  3. Liters = 2,122.8 ÷ 61.024
  4. Volume = 34.8 liters
  5. Ratio = 34.8 ÷ 170 = 0.205 L/lb

Result: 34.75L board with 0.204 ratio

Expert/Pro: Very low volume for expert surfers. Excellent maneuverability but requires advanced paddling strength and wave-reading skills. Best for hollow, powerful waves.

Beginner Longboard Example

9'0\" × 23\" × 3\", 170 lb rider

Result: ~75L (0.44 ratio - beginner friendly)

Pro Shortboard Example

5'10\" × 18.5\" × 2.25\", 170 lb rider

Result: ~25L (0.147 ratio - expert level)
